Diet Plays a Role

And obviously, Tabaco products are going to harm your teeth, they can cause oral cancer and gum disease. Second-hand smoke alone can cause health problems, such as gum disease. Cleanliness is Key

You need to keep your equipment as clean as possible. Always rinse your toothbrush after use and it can be stored anywhere as long as it is in an upright position and it can airdry – closed containers encourage the growth of bacteria. Cross-contamination is possible so it is better to store toothbrushes in separate containers. Replacing your toothbrush or the head of your electric toothbrush is important. You should invest in a new toothbrush as soon as the bristles become frayed – if this doesn’t happen in four months then it should be replaced regardless.

Flossing the Teeth

Flossing reaches places between your teeth where your toothbrush simply cannot. This is the reason why it is essential that we floss our teeth every day. When starting the process of flossing – make sure you have a sufficient amount of dental floss, around 46 centimetres.  Wrapping the majority of it around your middle fingers, you need to find a balance between keeping the tension and being gentle around the gums. Keep the floss against the teeth and use a rubbing motion when flossing. If you find flossing is very difficult for you, then perhaps using an interdental cleaner might be a better option for you. You can get a dental pick, pre-threaded flosser, tiny brushes that reach between teeth, a water flosser or wooden or silicone plaque remover – all of which will give your teeth a good clean.

The main thing to remember is that your basic oral hygiene routine will in fact have an effect on the lifespan and condition of your teeth. Seeing your dentist on a regular basis is important because he will spot where you are going wrong or perhaps tell you which area of your oral hygiene routine you may be slacking in.
